Okay so I could not sleep and I found myself watching countless videos on YouTube and I came across a very American way of money saving and money making… Dumpster diving. Normally I am very jealous of the bargains that can be found in the USA especially extreme couponing but I am not entirely sure what to think of this one.
What is dumpster diving?
So what is dumpster diving? Basically it involves travelling around the local shopping centres, rummaging through the shops bins and taking anything you find of interest or value. Having watched quite a few dumpster diving videos I find myself truly shocked at some of the things that the stores were throwing away! One lady hauled out 4 bin bags full of candy, each bag had hundreds of lollies, chocolate bars and various other sweet treats, only thrown away because they were Christmas items and it was past December. The lady diver and her small children were absolutely thrilled with their find but it left me wondering why it is thrown out in the first place? You would think they would put it on sale for a few pennies, at least the store would get something for the items and a lot of shoppers would bag bargains and if this failed to shift the stock then it would be best to donate it to a local Food Bank so those truly with nothing could benefit. If this lady diver had not grabbed these bags from the trash all of it would have ended up in landfill. About 1/3 of the worlds food produced ends up in landfill each year, that is around 1.3 billion tonnes, an obscene amount, especially when you consider the amount of children starving to death. The World Food Programme estimates there to be 795 million people in the world without enough food to survive
